Tricking ourselves to be more creative:

Different ways we could try to trick ourselves into being more creative that I though of were:
Focusing on how to approach each project uniquely so we will be more inspired because it would be more of our own ideas rather than the assignment.
Imagine that these are projects we have chosen to do in our free time, try to get ourselves to think they are.
We could just quit school and create art for ourselves, similarly to people quitting their jobs to work for themselves.
We could just stop looking at our grades telling teachers to file them but that we don’t want to see them, going cold turkey from them may make us less addicted to them.

interesting: it was interesting to see and do the in process critique of other students ideas for the street art. I also thought the critique of our absent image projects was cool and I like seeing what iconic images people chose and if there was a new meaning created from the images as parts were removed, I really enjoyed that project.
learned: I learned about the artist who created the image Obama's hope posters was based off of during our absent image critique, which was cool because i had never even stopped to think that that had been based off of something and I always really liked that poster.
ideas: I got the idea to make a tissue paper garden on the chain-link fence by the tennis courts for my street art project.

interesting: It was cool looking at the different types of street art, I really like the work that Steve Lambert does, and I really like the signs he's creating.
learned: We didn't learn much I just got some different ideas about what I could do for my street art project.
ideas: I want to use the absent image project or some other image to make a moveable mural using cardboard to create a mural that people can get rid of if they don't agree with it.

Have you ever felt someone was looking at you?
Yes when you look and see someone looking at you and then you make awkward eye contact and both look away. I think this is similar with artwork with eyes except when you make eye contact with it it doesn't look away and you are also want to keep looking.

What do you think of Leader's argument?
I think that he makes an interesting argument. I understand what he is saying about an image looking at you but instead of feeling like an image is looking back at me I feel more like it is a good image that is catching my eye. I thought I was really interesting that when pieces of art are vandalized that it is usually the eyes that are destructed first.

Do you make images to distract people?
Yes I think in a way thats why we all create images, to give people something to look at distracting them from whatever they were looking at before. I want to make images that stand out against other images.

Interesting: It was interesting learning how people can illuminate parts of images, it would be cool to try this on making other projects like poster design.
Learned: Today we learned how to get ride of parts of images, which was really cool.
Ideas: Some ideas I have for my project would be get ride of Audrey Hepburn from the Breakfast at Tiffany's window, or Nighthawks, or take Marylyn Monroe out of the Andy Warhol squares, or to get ride of the person in the Scream.

Interesting: It was interesting to get to look at the murals and talk about what people's ideas were when designing their murals.
Learned: How to use illustrator, this was helpful because I've been wanting to learn a little about illustrator to give me some sort of base for next year.
Ideas: I want to try to use illustrator for other projects now to keep learning new skill with it.

Interesting- It was interesting to use photoshop to crop our images so that they could fit as a tessellation. I like getting more practice with photoshop.
Learned-How to use some more tools in photoshop, like the stamp tool or how to change the canvas size. We also learned how to tessellate an image and then create the 3d image using the website.
Ideas- The tessellation project has made me think more about using tissue paper in other projects I like the way it looks, it was just kind of a pain to work with, with the glue because it becomes so thin and wet. I would like to try to incorporate tissue paper into another project.

Interesting: Looking at the color slide show and the examples of the patterns created like the project were working on now.

Learned: How to make a shape that fits together using shapes cut out and placed together, I forget the name of it.

Ideas: I got the idea to use tissue paper more in 2D work because it looks really nice on our puzzle like pieces, I'd like to use this in other works for other classes if I can incorporate it in.

Even though the demos are sometimes boring I think a demo would have been helpful for today's class because I was confused on how to start and work on the project, and I think many others were confused on how to tackle that project.

Something that interested me was scanning my drawing into photoshop from their Gokey showed me how to manipulate the colors so that I did not have to change the colors of my image using color pencils as I had originally done.

I learned about the best way to place images and artist statements on presentation boards. I also learned more about photoshop

I would like to try to create another image using photoshop to copy and paste images together in their realistic colors. I saw many of my fellow classmates do this and I think it made their images look very professional.

Mural Artist Statement

My idea for our Mural was to have images of cars on the wall across from parking spaces. I was hoping this would make people do a double take and for a second think the parking lot goes on. I made the images of cars, cars from the 1950's hoping this would cross their mind quickly, "Why is there a car such an old car parked in front of me" kind of giving them a surreal feeling, making them feel lost in time for a second. I really wanted to incorporate bright colors into my mural, but I do not know if I did this successful, that is the one part of my mural I am unsure of.

Interesting: today we received our mail art from the other 2D class. I thought it was really interesting how they posed their questions to us and the way they created mail for someone they have never met.
Learned: I learned more about scanning and was able to upload my covers and sketches almost completely by myself. I also really like learning how to use the india ink. I really like doing work in black and white and I usually use a sharpie, I am excited to now use the india ink instead.
Ideas:Today's class made me want to use india ink in my projects, I also like the idea of mail art, and want to send this to someone completely random to see if they reply. I'm also excited to expand on my mural ideas and am looking forward to making a professional version of it for next week.

Mexican Mural Movement Response

Five Essential Elements of the Mexican Mural Movement:
1. Jose Vasconcelos thought that public art would help educate and excite the public and get them to support the new government. The movement was states sponsored so they had the money to do it and the support of their country.
2. Artists collaborated to make cultural murals about their shared heritage, trying to get the Mexican people to get involved in the development of their new nation. Many artists gathered to take part.
3. Many of the artists showed nationalism in their art by incorporating Mexican hero’s and people, and pre-Hispanic types of art. They also incorporated European modernism.
4. They brought together many art movements in their murals like the Italian Renaissance, Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Postimpressionism, and Surrealism. They also incorporated the ideas of Marx and Lenin.
5. The formation of the Union of Technical Workers, Painters, and Sculptures and “A Declaration of Social, Political, and Aesthetic Principles” defined the movement and defined it as a public, ideologically driven, didactic art.

The murals talked about in the Mexican Murals reading made me want to consider basing one of my mural ideas on something political, or at least something that would make people think. I don’t think our mural has to be controversial, I just want our mural to make people stop and feel the urge to figure out what our mural is saying, not just see some pretty spray paint and keep on walking. This is what the Mexican muralists were doing. Rivera made people upset and made them want to figure out what he was thinking with the mural he started for Rockefeller Jr. Our mural is not going to be as widely seen as his because it is on the back of a building in Syracuse but that just means we need to make it that much more memorable to make viewers come to it, rather than it be conveniently place for the viewer.

Interesting:
When looking at the mural examples during class, one that really stuck out to me was the mural with the spilt can of paint that seeps out to cover the parking lot and some of the cars. I really liked this because it looked so realistic. When I picture murals in my head I never think of a mural where the things in it look photorealistic. It seems like many things are generalized or done with a look that is more like animation. I also like how he took the mural past the wall and incorporated not just the parking lot below but the cars in it.

Learned:
Something I think will be extremely helpful in my future that we learned about this week was how to document out work. I’m not great with photography so the demo using the light was really informative to me.

Ideas:
Learning more about Photoshop in last class and with the Amalgamation project made me want to work more with Photoshop. I know there is still a lot I need to learn about Photoshop but the practice has help, and I intend to practice more because as I learn more about Photoshop I enjoy using it more. My new Photoshop knowledge has given me ideas on how to incorporate it into other projects or to use it in times where I might have resorted to other methods.

In today's class I got to see nine interesting covers for sketchbook, it was cool to see all of the different ways people conveyed the ideas of covering a book. The most interesting cover was Meghan's purse sketchbook. It was different from anyone else's in class and she used materials and techniques that no one else did so it was really interesting to see such a different approach to the assignment. I also like Cristi's idea of using a shoe to show a cover becuase of the many ways shoes cover, feet, ground, and time. Her idea of covering was my favorite.
Today I learned more about using photoshop. I have used it before but I do not know much at all about it, so it was great to learn how to use it to make a amalgamations. I also learned how to use pixolou to find more pictures for the amalgamation project, when I ran out of images on google. I think pixolou will come in handy often when google, and flicker do not have many.
The surface pattern Cristi used for the inside of her book and on the outside of her cover beneath the shoe gave me the idea that I would like to try to design something like that or uses some cool pattern in a future project. Using flicker was also helpful for giving me ideas for pictures and concepts to use in my amalgamation, its a great place to search for pictures and develop ideas.

Top Five Amalgamation Ideas

STOPLIGHT: the thing that I like about the stoplight idea is that the stop light will always show the red green and yellow in the same order because that is the universal way they are show. The edges maybe a little blurry because some are shaped differently, but the background will be completely different because they will all be set in different places, so it will be interesting to have it go from clear to a little blurry to very blurry.

WOMEN'S MAGAZINE COVERS: women's magazines will be interesting because there always a close up of a women on the cover. I don't know if I should stick to one magazine so the title stays the same and the women changes or use different women magzines so both the women and titles change. The women being more blurry than the titles.

WELCOME TO _____ SIGNS: This would be cool because the welcome to would remain pretty clear, but the town title would change, and the backgrounds would all change drastically.

BOSTON GLOBE: Im from Boston and my dad reads the paper everyday so I'm used to seeing it all of the time, I think it would be interesting to see the title stay the same as the stories around it change.

FAMOUS PEOPLE ON THE RED CARPET: I really like award shows like the Oscars and the Grammys and watching the red carpet as everyone arrives in their dresses, I thought it would be cool because the red carpet and the background would remain similar as the women and their dress change, with the ghost of a womanly figure remaining.

1. There are three chairs in Kosuth's artwork. These three chairs are just shown from different viewpoints. There is the chair in reality done by the maker of the chair. A chair is shown front on in an imitation of a chair that was in reality done by the maker of the chair. A chair is shown front on in an imitations of a chair that was in reality. Their third chair is a noun and an interpretation of a chair. All three pieces are chairs but the 3D chair is the only one seen in reality.

2. Plato would consider the middle wooden chair the real chair. He talks about beds and tables being in reality and those who paint them imitating the real chair and just making an appearance. Plato would consider the wooden chair to have been created and made. He would have said the photograph of the chair is done as an imitation of the wooden chair, ad i believe he would have said the definition was an interpretation of the "real" wooden chair.
